Today is my birthday. I will spend the day in school, teaching my fifth graders. I really, really dislike being at school on my birthday. I’m not really sure why, but it’s how I feel. Some years, I was lucky and had the day off if my birthday fell on a Saturday or Sunday. Four years ago, my daughter Chelsey talked me into us both taking a personal day at work and spending it together in New York City. I took the train in after school the night before and we had dinner in her apartment and talked late into the night. We thought about going to the theater, but ended up on this cold, rainy day, walking in the city streets holding umbrellas, going to the movies (La La Land) and Chelsey’s favorite lunch place… a cute little cafe that served a gazillion different kinds of tea. Oh, what a wonderful day that was!

Such a thoughtful and thought-provoking piece. You've got me thinking about my own birthdays. I don't often enjoy them either. The one you spent with your daughter sounds just perfect! I wonder if you could make a resolution to start having birthdays like that every year. I've discovered that I like my birthday best if there are no gifts, no cards, and no hoopla--though I do like going out to dinner so I can get out of cooking and I always like a good dessert! I think our birthdays should be our day to spend as we wish, even if it's doesn't line up with what is more typical for a birthday celebration.

Happy Birthday! I hope you have a fabulous day with little surprises sprinkled throughout the day. The change of decade birthdays have been the hardest for me.

Happy Happy Birthday! Whenever I come across your slice, I have to read it! Our dogs are TWINS. Did you happen to get yours in Bird in Hand PA? Just curious! As we get older, birthdays do have different meaning. It's ok, I think to have that odd feeling - nothing is wrong with you!! But I do hope the year ahead is full of goodness and loads of dog cuddles with your Maple Mae!
